The Initiatory Development of the MUFC

Manchester United Football Club, as known as Man. United or simply United, is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Manchester United competes in the Premier League, the top fight of English football. The club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, and it changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 after a hard time.   At present, Old Trafford is the home stadium of the team, to which the club moved in 1910. This centuried club has its ups and downs in such a long developing history.

In 1878, MUFC was formed as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the workers of Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot at Newton Heath. At first, the players matched against amateur football clubs formed by other departments and railway companies, but on 20 November 1880, they participated in their first match on record. Unfortunately ,wearing the colors of the railway company – green and gold, they were defeated 6–0 by Bolton Wanderers’ reserve team.

By 1888, the club had become more professional and registered as a founding member of The Combination, a regional football league.  The league had only run for one season and then dissolved, therefore, Newton Heath had to join the newly formed Football Alliance. This time, the alliance ran for three seasons before being merged with the Football League. This resulted in the club starting the 1892–93 season in the First Division, meanwhile it had exited the railway company becoming independent and removed the “LYR” from its name. After two seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division.

In January 1902, the finical situation of the club went bad with debts of £2,670 which is a huge amount at that time. The club was bankrupted. Harry Stafford, the captain of the team, had to find four local businessmen for capital injection, including John Henry Davies (who became club president). Each one is willing to invest £500 in return for a direct interest in running the club and who subsequently officially changed the name to Manchester United on 24 April 1902.

Under Ernest Mangnall, who worked as team manager in 1903, the team finished as Second Division runners-up in 1906 and gain upgrade to the First Division, which they won the club’s first league title in 1908. The following season is bond to be one of the most memorable period in team history. beginning with victory in the first ever Charity Shield and ending with the club’s first FA Cup title, the club had scored 82 goals in one season, which broke the record.

Before 1909, the team played match in Clayton Stadium which is poorly equipped. The old Trafford was constructed in 1909 and was put in use on 19th February, 1910. This new home stadium witnessed Manchester United winning the First Division for the second time in 1911. At the end of the following season, Mangnall, who is deemed to be the first t manager of MUFC, left the club to join Manchester City. The achievements and great honors he brought to team is uncountable and respectable. After his leaving, the team kept its fluctuation between First Division and Second Division till Second World War.
