Manchester United and Matt Busby

Manchester United Football Club, as a outstanding club around the world, has a long developing history in which the team had secured numerous honors with their efforts. All these honors belong to not only the players but also coach. Matt Busby is such a valuable coach who dedicate to the club and captain the team to a better situation.

In October 1945, Matt Busby was appointed as managerial role of MUFC in order to help the team prepare for the new matches after interruption caused by World War Two. This new manager requested that he be directly involved in training, team selection and even choose the players to be bought and sold without interference from the club directors, who, he believed, did not know the game as well as he did. Such a thorough control over the team was unprecedented in the English game. Busby was originally offered a three-year contract but managed to secure himself a five-year deal after explaining that it would take at least that long for his revolution to have a tangible effect.

In this five years, Manchester United were runners-up in the league in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951, and won the FA Cup in 1948. This was a hard-won success for a club which had last won a major trophy in 1911 and had spent the interwar years bouncing between the First and Second Divisions. In 1952, the club won the First Division. This is its first league title for 41 years.

In 1951, Busby’s dictatorial control over the team shows its advantage. He gradually replaced the older player with the players as young as 16 and 17 rather than with those experienced and famous. These youth include right-back Bill Foulkes, centre-halves Mark Jones and Jackie Blanchflower, wingers Albert Scanlon and David Pegg and forward Liam Whelan

With an average age of 22,this group of players is called “the Busby Babes” by the media. Busby’s faith in his youth players is proved to be a right decision by two championship of the league in both 1956 and 1957. In 1957, Manchester United became the first English team participating in the European Cup, despite disagreement from The Football League.

On 6th February 1958, a disastrous air crash happened in Munich which kills 23 lives, including eight players of Manchester United and injured several more. Busby is one of the injured and stay in hospital around nine weeks for treatment. This disaster had damaged the team to a large degree.

Busby rebuilt the team through the 1960s by signing prominent players such as Denis Law and Pat Crerand. The new-signed players cooperate with the next generation of youth players – including George Best – to win the FA Cup in 1963. The following season, they finished second in the league, then won the title in 1965 and 1967. In 1968, Manchester United became the first English (and second British) club to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4–1 in the final with a team that contained three European Footballers of the Year: Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.

Matt Busby resigned as manager in 1969 after a companion as long as 26 years. It is he who build such a brilliant Manchester United Football Club and bring many eminent youth players the chance to show their talent. He is a remarkable coach no matter in MUFC or the world.

The Initiatory Development of the MUFC

Manchester United Football Club, as known as Man. United or simply United, is a professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Manchester United competes in the Premier League, the top fight of English football. The club was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, and it changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 after a hard time.   At present, Old Trafford is the home stadium of the team, to which the club moved in 1910. This centuried club has its ups and downs in such a long developing history.

In 1878, MUFC was formed as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the workers of Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot at Newton Heath. At first, the players matched against amateur football clubs formed by other departments and railway companies, but on 20 November 1880, they participated in their first match on record. Unfortunately ,wearing the colors of the railway company – green and gold, they were defeated 6–0 by Bolton Wanderers’ reserve team.

By 1888, the club had become more professional and registered as a founding member of The Combination, a regional football league.  The league had only run for one season and then dissolved, therefore, Newton Heath had to join the newly formed Football Alliance. This time, the alliance ran for three seasons before being merged with the Football League. This resulted in the club starting the 1892–93 season in the First Division, meanwhile it had exited the railway company becoming independent and removed the “LYR” from its name. After two seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division.

In January 1902, the finical situation of the club went bad with debts of £2,670 which is a huge amount at that time. The club was bankrupted. Harry Stafford, the captain of the team, had to find four local businessmen for capital injection, including John Henry Davies (who became club president). Each one is willing to invest £500 in return for a direct interest in running the club and who subsequently officially changed the name to Manchester United on 24 April 1902.

Under Ernest Mangnall, who worked as team manager in 1903, the team finished as Second Division runners-up in 1906 and gain upgrade to the First Division, which they won the club’s first league title in 1908. The following season is bond to be one of the most memorable period in team history. beginning with victory in the first ever Charity Shield and ending with the club’s first FA Cup title, the club had scored 82 goals in one season, which broke the record.

Before 1909, the team played match in Clayton Stadium which is poorly equipped. The old Trafford was constructed in 1909 and was put in use on 19th February, 1910. This new home stadium witnessed Manchester United winning the First Division for the second time in 1911. At the end of the following season, Mangnall, who is deemed to be the first t manager of MUFC, left the club to join Manchester City. The achievements and great honors he brought to team is uncountable and respectable. After his leaving, the team kept its fluctuation between First Division and Second Division till Second World War.
